Torreya taxifolia in Virginia

   Buchanan, Virginia:

November 2020, Sharon Mohney initiated the first large-scale, within-forest planting within Virginia of freshly harvested Torreya seeds.

The seeds were donated by owners of mature horticultural plantings of Florida Torreya in Clinton NC and Mt Olive NC.

The photo left shows an ideal landscape for torreya planting, based on what Torreya Guardians have learned thus far: (1) Planting on a slope beneath a deciduous canopy, and (2) planting amidst evergreen Christmas ferns, which offer superb camouflage for torreya seedlings as protection against winter-hungry deer.

I'm interested in direct sowing some Torreya seeds in my central Virginia (Charlottesville, 7b) landscape, if possible. I think I have a great east-facing slope that gets 3 to 4 hours of morning sun followed by afternoon shade.

It's high-limbed tulip poplar with an understory of Christmas ferns and American holly.

Light to moderate deer pressure but I would cage the seedlings to be safe. I am an experienced gardener and plant collector with a special interest in conifers and would love to support the effort and grow a special tree too!

Note by editor: NOVEMBER 2024, Torreya Guardians sent him 50 seeds from the private pair of torreyas we annually harvest from in Mt. Olive, NC. He is using a NEW RODENT-PROOF METHOD for direct planting of seeds: cans have hole in bottom and are fire-burned to remove the anti-corrosive coating.

   Staunton, Virginia:

Email 9 June 2020 from H Bruce Rinker to Connie Barlow:

"We now have 3 healthy Torreya specimens growing in the Staunton area."
