Torreya taxifolia in Louisiana

Caroline Dormon Nature Preserve (Briarwood Preserve)

PHOTO LEFT: Only one of the three torreya trees planted by Caroline Dormon circa 1950 is still alive in 2025.

There are no signs of disease, and the tree has been producing both male and female buds for at least 15 years.

Five seeds were produced in 2018, when Torreya Guardians visited this tree and the two same-age upland trees that, unlike this big lower slope tree, were stressed by drought.

PHOTOS BELOW: Most significant about this site is it is one of only 4 horticultural sites in North America that exhibit full naturalization. Not only are seeds produced here, but seedlings under and near the tree have been documented as establishing with no human assistance.

July 2018, Garrie Landry wrote to Torreya Guardians:

"I recently traveled to FL and picked up several very nice nursery-grown Torreya plants, and brought them back to Louisiana."

A report to Torreya Guardians July 2020 included photos at left.
